Modifications

to improve your TFDB experience ← Resources

1. Custom HUDs

A custom HUD might better your TF2 experience. Find yourself a good one at tf2huds.dev.

2. Custom sounds

Contrary to what you might think, this is not about hitsounds and killsounds, but rather about the Pyro's deflect success and the level 1 sentry alarm.

The deflect success sound is a little difficult to catch for some players. A custom sound helps with that, and also helps you realise the delay it takes for your deflects to register on high ping.

The level 1 sentry alarm has a bit of a delay. A custom sound that is easier on the ears and has no delay is better! ^-^

Deflect success
Level 1 sentry alarm

The .vpk is the one to use. Drop it in \tf\custom\ and it works. The .zip is the same sounds as loose files, for anybody who wants to swap them for their own: unzip the folder into \tf\custom\ instead.

How to make your own

Replace flame_thrower_airblast_rocket_redirect.wav for the deflect, and sentry_spot.wav for the alarm, keeping the original names.

TF2 is fussy about the format. Your files must be:

  • WAV, 16-bit
  • Mono, merged
  • 11025, 22050, or 44100 Hz

If you do not know what the above means, refrain from making custom sounds. TF2 will 100% destroy your ears as a consequence of not being able to read those files correctly.

3. Snowball rocket

Flawfree's TFDB QOL Mod is a game changer. It modifies the rocket, making it easier to see and follow. Have a look for yourself.

Custom rockets that make it easier to know how far the rocket is from you are strictly prohibited and will result in a ban. Please just use Flawfree's snowball rockets.

4. Game optimisations

TF2 is really not well optimised, and you are 100% not getting the full bang for your buck when it comes to performance.

  • Head over to Mastercomfig's config generator
  • Choose the right preset for your computer. If you have a strong machine, do not be shy about High or Ultra, it will definitely perform better
  • Customise the preset to your liking
  • Customise your binds
  • Select the addons you want
  • Install

5. Network configs

RDL's dodgeball servers allow 0 lerp and run at 128 ticks with a 10k update rate. Your default network config will not take full advantage of that.

If you are not using Mastercomfig, put it in your \tf\cfg\ folder.

If you are using Mastercomfig, put it in both \tf\cfg\ and \tf\custom\comfig-custom\cfg\app\.

It is called pyro.cfg because TF2 runs a class config when you pick that class. Renaming it stops it working.

6. Other allowed modifications

  • Custom viewmodels and crosshairs
  • Removal of ambient soundscapes
  • Flat textures
  • No-hats mods
  • Transparent viewmodels

If you are unsure about the legality of a particular modification, please contact an admin on RDL's Discord server to clarify the situation before using it in an official match.

Disallowed mods

  • Rocket models that make it easier to gauge the distance of a rocket. For example a ring that grows smaller around the rocket as it gets closer, or rockets that change colour relative to distance
  • Pyro model modifications
  • Mods that make the Pyro deflect hitbox visible
  • Any mods that can give an unfair advantage
